Yeah, that's the idea. I'd hate for anyone else to have to repeat
the process..it took quite awhile (and lots of false starts) to
figure it all out.

well, it turns out that if I say "reboot" instead of "halt", that
Linux resets the machine, it goes back into memory check and
other self-test stuff, and then the power-switch just works fine.
I suspect it won't be too hard to fix this one...just have to
make sure Linux handles whatever interrupt the pseudo-power-switch
generates.
