The 1144 emulates a 16450. The 2144 ("Gold") emulates a 16550. I would
get the 1144 only if you plan to use DOS forever. With OS/2 or Windows the
extra $$ for the 2144 is well worth it. MSRP for the 2144 is something
like $275. Sparco had it for $245 about a month ago when I got mine.
