on dual scan monitor the memory is split in to two. the upper 512K
mirror the lower 512K to allow dual scan. -> no 1MB any more ;-( (you
only get it for external displays).

at least for the 750Cs (and i assume for the 360 as well) you have to
disable the LCD with the thinkpad-display utility to use higher
resolution for external display.

PS: i'm working on a utility for XFree so you don't have to patch it
    anymore. handling dual scan works fine now but enabling/disabling
    internal display to allow higher resolution on the external
    display is yet untested. if you are interested let me know and i
    can update you on this project.
