This is a "feature" whose intent was probably to improve performance
on battery rundown tests. It's been there since at least the TP750.
Assuming the 755CX does it the same way, use the DOS PS2 utility:

  PS2 BR N
  PS2 BR E

I think N changes it to "normal" (full range of brightness) while E
changes it to dim ("economy"?).
