Just an anecdotal reference, I've had two xjack modems (a 14.4 and a 28.8)
and have never had the xjack break (I have broken a couple dongles).

These poor xjacks take an amazing amount of abuse, since I use it at home,
the phone cord is generally laying about begging to get tripped over,
stepped on, etc.

One particularly spectacular trip yanked the entire pcmcia modem out of its
socket, socket cover and all.. popped it back in and all was well.

BTW, both of these were megahertz, can't say about the others.
