Well, after looking around and some reading reviews I just
tried the Net Toob software (a video player that also does
MIDI and lots of other stuff, http://duplexx.com/dl_nt.html)
and it plays without all the display problems I mentioned
previously. They claim it's relatively efficient and that
does seem to be the case - nothing strange at all - it just
works. It costs US$19.95 to register or it won't play some
(unspeficied) types of MPEG-1 files after two weeks of use.

I also managed to stumble back on to one of the web sites
that sends MIDI (there must be more than a few but there
are so many to go through) for testing while the modem is
running - it's www.ozemail.com.au/~elfa which loads pretty
fast even here in the USA.
