It is very doubtful that IBM will ever release a 56K upgrade for the 760's
with the Mwave processor. From what I understand, the Mwave system in these
models does not have the power to handle a 56K modem connection. Heck, they
have a hard enough time with a 28.8k connection and sound at the same time,
and sound has to be disabled if you are online at a 33.6k connection.
My advice? Buy a PC Card 56k modem and disable the internal Mwave modem.
That's what I did when I had my 760ED, and the unit performed much better
(no more crashes and lockups like I had when using the Mwave modem).
The reason that the modem in the 770 can be software upgraded is because the
DSP system has been upgraded to a more powerful processor. This system works
much better and more reliably than the earlier Mwave systems, at least in my
experience.
