Parallel Port problems

A few days ago, I posted an inquiry about my zip drive difficulties with
my TP560. It turns out that the parallel port is the problem (I can't
print, the CD-ROM doesn't work).. A friend called IBM tech support last
night, and tried a couple of things, including running a Looptest (F1
for Easy-Setup, test on parallel port, Ctrl-A for Tool and Looptest).
They ran the Looptest with the zip drive, but it should be run with a
loopback cable. The three local places IBM suggested were a)
uninterested since I didn't buy from them, b) closed, and c) closed.
The fourth place had not heard of a loopback cable.

What is a loopback cable, and what is the problem I am looking for? Am
I going to be replacing the parallel port? The machine is about 6
months old.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Wyn
