Are you sure your crossed twisted pair cable works between the thinkpad and
the desktop? Sometimes ethernet cards have a "link integrity signal" and
they
won't transmit on a wire without that signal on. This signal is provided by
most ether hubs. The solution is to disable the link integrity signal on
one or both ether cards.
