Thinkpad 755c charging anomaly?

I just bought a refurbished IBM 755c through online auction. I have fallen
in love with the machine already, but have noticed what appears to be a
charging anomaly:

If the AC adapter is plugged into the system when the machine is already
running (or, if the system is switched on after the adapter has been plugged
in and began charging), the charge light remains on for a few seconds, then
goes dark, and the battery light, at the moment the charge light goes dark,
changes from a solid color to an oscillating amber/green.

This happens regardless of battery condition (high or low). When the system
is powered off, the charge light comes on again, and the battery light
changes from warbling amber/green, to a steady color.

Can someone tell me what this means?

The battery charges great, when the system is off, and also, the battery
runtime seems to be in the ballpark, relative to the published specs of what
is expected (it's a NiMH).

Now, I checked the IBM support web site and found a short article ( at
http://www3.pc.ibm.com/techinfo/72da.html )stating that certain 755c's will
not charge on AC, with certain 35 watt AC adapters, and the recommendation
is to purchase a 40 watt adapter for such 755c systems. Three part numbers
of 35 watt adapters are listed, of which my adapter matches one.

Here is my question: if this is a known problem, is it with my *particular*
35 watt adapter, or the 755c? That is, if I were to buy another *35 watt*
adapter (not on the list of the 3) from the corner computer store (40 watt
adapters don't seem to be widely available anymore, if at all), will I have
the same problem?

The article mentioned above lists 3 AC adapters by part number, but at the
time of the article, perhaps those 3 were the only 35 watt adaptors in
production, which raises the question whether the problem was specitic to
only those adapters (in combination with affected 755c systems), or whether
*any* 35 watt adaptor (in combination with certain 755c's) will create this
problem.

Any comments or similar experiences would be appreciated, as well as model
numbers of non-35 watt adapters, if anyone thinks that is what I really
need.

Thanks
