Pete,

I can answer one of your questions (see below):

It would almost certainly not come with an OS installed. I don't know
that I've ever seen this. It would be pretty hard to sell this way
because ultimately lots of drivers and setting have to be customized for
the particular laptop that it's being used in.

When buying an extra HD for the 770 there are a couple of things to be
aware of. First, you have to read the description carefully to see if
the drive is built with the correct shell to fit the regular HD bay.
Only a 770-specific HD will fit there. Sometimes you'll see drives
advertised for the 770 but in the fine print it says you can only use
them in the Ultrabay with an adapter. Most drives built for the 76x
models will work in a 770 with an adapter (about $69) in the Ultrabay.
This same adapter is also required to use a 770-specific drive in the
Ultrabay. Another option is to buy a generic drive and insert the guts
into a 770 or 76x drive shell. I don't know much about this. There is
someone else on the ThinkPad list (Bill Morrow, I believe) that sells
these shells. I think his web site is http://thinkpads.com.

If you buy a HD that you can only use in the Ultrabay, you can still
install another OS on it and boot from it. However, things can get
tricky with this setup. For instance, you can't use the Ultrabay CD
player when the HD is installed, so you might have to copy the OS's
setup CD to the built in drive or connect to another computer's shared
CD drive via a network adapter to do the install. I have successfully
installed Linux and Win98 this way on a HD in the Ultrabay. You'll need
to make a change in the BIOS's boot sequence to be able to boot from the
HD in the Ultrabay (HD2) and you'll have to change it back to boot from
the main HD (HD1).

If you have more specific questions I'd be happy to field them.
