HI,
I just installed w98 on a tp600 and wanted to share a few things and invite some feedback.
After reading the w98 resource manual, I attempted to optimize the performance of w98 by:
1. Moving the swap file to another partition where nothing else goes on. In this case c:\, I put w98 in E:\. This is a 511meg partition. This should result in less fragmentation and conflict.
2. Changed the file performance settings to "server". This increases PathCache and NameCache quite a bit.
3. Turned on DMA for the CDROM and HD. They were off by default. No problems so far. By the way, are they turned on by default with W95 out of the box?
If anyone else has installed W98 on a TP600, check you system information program in w98, and check for shared IRQ's. I am sharing 3 and 10 with the DSP and modem, and 11 is shared by Neomagic, TI Cardbus controller and IRQ holder for PCI steering. No conflicts are noted in device manager.
The installation went perfect with no problems. I added a number of partitions with PartitionMagic before starting, and now have C:\ root and swp file, D:\ for applications, e:\Win98, F:\ and G:\ for different types of data, and H and I formatted NTFS for upcoming NT40 installation.
