I have recently taken a closer look at the Personalization Editor for
the ThinkPad.
For the personalization, one first chooses a 160x100 pixel 4-bit
(16-color) bitmap image for the background. Then, personal information
text is entered into a form. According to the Help file, a 320x200 pixel
1-bit (monochrome) bitmap is created from this text.
Interestingly, the bitmap chosen for the background and the one created
for the personal information are stored on the Personalization Diskette
in a different format: The files are called BACK.DAT and NAME.DAT
respectively. I made sure that the files are not just renamed, and
attepted to open them with a bitmap editor: they were not recognized.
So the question I am asking is the following: Which format is this DAT
format and how do I convert BMP files to DAT files?
The reason why I am asking this is because this way one could create a
custom bitmap for the personal information, an image which wouldn't have
to contain text only like the one created by the utility. Furthermore,
the Personalization Editor could be bypassed entirely and the files
copied directly to the Personalization Diskette.
