Hello there,

(sorry that this posting is longish, it contains several pieces of diagnose
output)

I have undertaken new adventures in the pursuit of getting my TP 600
to work under Linux. This time it's sound I am worried about.

The problem is, I can't hear anything when I play a sound file -- no
matter the volume setting. All I get is a very short click and then
silence. I can play audio CDs, if this has something to do with it.

My System is RedHat 5.1, with 2.0.35 kernel. I configured the sound
drivers this way (with the values that I took from the Win95 device
manager):

<*> Sound card support
[*] /dev/dsp and /dev/audio support
[*] MIDI interface support
<*> FM synthesizer (YM3812/OPL-3) support
<*> MPU-401 support (NOT for SB16)
<*> Support for Crystal CS4232 based (PnP) cards
(330) I/O base for MPU401 Check from manual of the card
(9) MPU401 IRQ Check from manual of the card
(530) CS4232 audio I/O base 530, 604, E80 or F40
(5) CS4232 audio IRQ 5, 7, 9, 11, 12 or 15
(0) CS4232 audio DMA 0, 1 or 3
(3) CS4232 second (duplex) DMA 0, 1 or 3
(330) CS4232 MIDI I/O base 330, 370, 3B0 or 3F0
(9) CS4232 MIDI IRQ 5, 7, 9, 11, 12 or 15
(65536) Audio DMA buffer size 4096, 16384, 32768 or 65536

(all lines that don't appear here are unchecked in my configuration)
What worries me in this case is that the CS4232 option appears only if
I enable MPU-401 support. Why's that?

The kernel recognizes my sound chip (cut from dmesg):

Sound initialization started
<CS4232 (CS4231)> at 0x530 irq 5 dma 0,3
<Yamaha OPL3 FM> at 0x388
Sound initialization complete

And finally, /dev/sndstat produces the following output:

Sound Driver:3.5.4-960630
Kernel: Linux install 2.0.35 #3 Fri Jul 31 11:54:47 MST 1998 i586
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 21: CS4232
Type 22: CS4232 MIDI
Type 1: OPL-2/OPL-3 FM
Type 5: Roland MPU-401

Card config:
(CS4232 MIDI at 0x330 irq 9 drq 0)
CS4232 at 0x530 irq 5 drq 0,3
(Roland MPU-401 at 0x330 irq 9 drq 0)
OPL-2/OPL-3 FM at 0x388 drq 0

Audio devices:
0: CS4232 (CS4231) (DUPLEX)

Synth devices:
0: Yamaha OPL-3

Midi devices:

Timers:
0: System clock
1: CS4232 (CS4231)

Mixers:
0: CS4232 (CS4231)

If anybody has a pointer to where I might have done something wrong,
any help is appreciated (of course)!

        Alexander
