Most new HP printers require Bidirectional parallel ports to work.
To enable EPP/ bidirectional mode on most IBM thinkpads and desktops the
PORT adress must be changed .
YUP !
Even better is the fact that this is rarely (if ever ) documented.
So try and change the port adress.
I just came across this again last week setting up an IBM Z workstation .
Dual Pentium Pros ...very nice toy. ;-}
BTW a Good source of IBM parts; workstation and thinkpads is
www.usapc.com.
The Garbage character situation may not be related.
The SparQ situation is.
There is sounds like the install software is getting confused as to the capbilities of your port
and picks the wrong parameters.
