I once used an 80MHz 486 with 8MB RAM to run OS/2. With all the swapping,
it took only
a year and a half to
kill the hard drive, but it worked until then.

I think you've got the answer. My favorite, of course, is the one that
runs on OS/2. :-) You could even use WebExplorer -- it uses even less
memory and can pull in the web pages and display them faster. You can even
make DOS think its got 16MB of RAM, if that helps.

Sounds like the first lesson for your niece (???). Maybe she could install
OS/2 on the 486? Sounds like she may want to with such a dislike of
Windows, especially with Win 3.1.
