Getting to you belatedly on this...

My 701C (stock 486 processor) does something fairly similar: if it's in
suspend for a long time, when I open it up, I get a black screen with a
blinking text-mode-style cursor and the clock face. It just stays there and
doesn't give the "powering down in 15 seconds" message.

With some tinkering, I found I could wake it up pretty much all the time if
I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and then hit the Esc key a few times (maybe once is all
it needs). Go figure...
