I don't know the particulars of the card you're considering, but I
recently bought a 56K x2 card for $79 from http://www.onsale.com under
the SVEC brand name, which contained a Cirrus Logic chipset. I ended
up returning it for a refund.
I use two different ISP's which both provide 56k x2 dial-ins. But with
the Cirrus Logic/SVEC card I could never get any better than 19,200 -
28,800 bps transfer rates, which is no better than I get with the
701's internal modem (19,200 bps data, BTW) or my Megahertz XJ2288
card (v.34). The Cirrus Logic/SVEC card also had the annoying habit
under Win95 Dialup Networking of displaying as the connect speed
whatever I had set as the maximum speed under the modem properties. If
I'd set 115,200 bps (which is usually recommended), then that would be
the connection speed shown, which is certainly erroneous.
There was no problem installing the modem under Win95. It just didn't
perform as advertised. Also, I don't know about compatibility with
OS/2. It was advertised on ONSALE's spec page as OS/2 compatible, but
there was no OS/2 driver on the disk provided, and since it didn't
give me high-speed performance under Windows I never tried it with
OS/2 (which is on another hard drive for my 701, and used less
often). While I didn't care for the modem, the SVEC people were very
helpful and easy to reach.
