This is exactly the point. What I'm going to do is an involuntary
upgrade to 96MB--I just bought a bona-fide 32MB IBM memory chip (it's not
significantly more in context of a >$3000US machine!) and I'm going to
toss both chips in and see how they work. If I have to, I can then pull
the Viking chip and start hassling with the mail order vendor who sold it
to me, and still have the 64MB that are a minimum for the work I need to
do.

PS: Gawd! 96MB of ram. My first computer had 3K (not M) of ram. And
it had a 19" display, too. (OK, it hooked up to the TV set, but still.)
And that blazing cassette-tape storage drive...

Anybody want to guess the machine?
