John-

First thing I would check is to see if the sound has been disabled. Go to
your Thinkpad features program and click on the button with the speaker
icon. This will let you enable or disable the onboard sound. It may also be
caused by a resource conflict due to new additional hardware or changed
settings. The properties for that device in the Device Manager will tell
you.
