After you make sure that it is actually enabled in the ThinkPad Features program, you might want to expunge it from W95, then have
W95 reinstall it (and thereby find a good set of interrupts etc.) In the windows/inf directory you'll find a pair of drv*.bin
files; either delete or rename these, delete the sound card in the System window, then reboot. W95 will create a new driver
database (the .bin files), and find the sound card - you can then tell it where
your new drivers are.
BTW, the last time I did this (after a bad directx experience) I still had no sound; I had to muck around with manual choice of
interrupts and dma for
the card until I found one that worked. Don't know why.
