Following up late on this one... I think each kind of hard drive has its own
characteristic sounds. My 2645-51U doesn't make the kind of "thonk" sounds
you describe, but it had an IBM 4Gb drive in it (and now has an IBM 6.4Gb).
OTOH, my Libretto 50 *does* make sounds something like you describe, and it
has a Hitachi DK237A-32 drive that I installed in it. That drive's been
running reliably for several months now.
So if anyone said, "My ThinkPad 600 doesn't sound like yours", well, it may
just be because of a different model of drive.
