I tried plugging a Hitachi (Microtech) flash card into my 770 and
the 770 thought it didn't have the right drivers, and sent me into
an installation wizard, which then somehow messed up the PCMCIA
configuration so I couldn't use any pcmcia cards including my modem.
I called tech support and after trying a bunch of things they had
me run Windows Setup again, which re-installed Windows from the
online .cab files. This didn't go too smoothly; a few files were
missing (none seemed important) and now when I boot it says
something about a non-functioning file in SYSTEM.INI then says
something about windows\system\vmm32\ntkern.vxd (which does exist).
It says hit any key to continue, and I do; and it comes up normally.
But it has put my screen in 256-color mode and the menu in Control
Panel no longer lets me choose 65536 colors, even at 800x600!
Any idea what has happened and how I can fix it? It may be time for
the recovery cd.... :(
