This must be parallel port week on the ThinkPad list!

You can certainly tell 95 to make any port an ECP if the hardware permits,
you just have to choose
an ECP configuration in the device manager then then manually fiddle
with the resource allocations. However, you *might* have to update
your version of W95 - some of this stuff changed a lot early in OSR2.

Oh, and in case you didn't see my last post on the subject,
http://www.dcc.ufal.br/~cws/Unindexed/ppans.htm is a good starting point for
parallel port questions.

Unlike some drives, scanners do *not* operate faster in ECP than EPP;
since the latter is usually easier to configure, I suggest you use that.
You say you tried bidirectional and had trouble; did you try rebooting
with the scanner turned on? W95 is kind of brain-dead when it comes to correct on-the-fly identification of devices on the printer
port.
