Does DVD make CD-ROM redundant?

This is not a philosophical question, but a purely technical one. Through
unforseen circumstances, I find myself the proud owner of a new IBM DVD
drive, happily ensconsed in my UltraBay and playing Peckinpah's _The Wild
Bunch_ to most impressive effect. (I knew that 14.1 screen would be worth
the $$$!)

The question: I *also* have a 24X CD-Rom drive. Is there any technical
reason, any usage situation, where the CDROM will do something faster or
better than the DVDROM? Or should I just try to sell the CDROM? (Anybody
want it...?)

PS: Let's pass over the weight consideration (DVD is noticeably heavier
than the CD); the thing's a brick anyway.
