Hi all,
I don't remember who mentioned it a little while ago, but someone
said that DVD drives can read CD-I's. I didn't pay attention because
I didn't have access to one, but a friend just got a Dell (what a brick,
but it has everything! Just no Trackpoint...).
I am in the possession of a "pure" CD-I, a CD Interactive with movie
clips but not a file system. The Dell's DVD couldn't read the disk,
and neither can any of the diverse CD readers I've seen. There are
CD-I's that have the movie as an MPEG in a file system that PCs
can read, and those work just like any CD-ROM. But, as I feared,
DVDs can't read pure CD-I's. I have yet to see anything on that CD-I...
For what it's worth, there is one person who could have helped me,
but I've lost contact to him. He found out that the CD-I players are
OS-9 based, and any piece of hardware can bring along its own
driver in ROM, so he patched an ethernet card into the box and had
it running on his (extensive) home network. Cool...
PS: it is not productivity enhancing to have DVD Star Trek movies
playing in the office next door...
