Just maybe it's hardware? An ambiguous signal?

Subject: The never ending story (ie phantom floppy drive)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all that offered advice on my floppy drive problem. Well, I
tried
everyone's suggestions, and some ideas of my own, and the problem
still remains.

There are no relevant entries in my registry for a:, retry, floppy,
disk,
drive, run, runonce, etc. My recent, pif, documents and recycled
folders
have been deleted and recreated. There are no shortcuts or "run"
menu
entries to a:. Removing background programs (down to the bare windows
shell)
has no effect. And so it goes......

I have noticed that if I try to access my cd or my LS120 when there
are no
disks in them I immediately (instantly) get a drive not ready dialog.
 But
for the a: drive this sometimes takes up to a minute or more. Now it
strikes me that my problem could be Explorer going about its normal
business, checking drives at odd times (who knows with Microsoft), and
the
freezes may be explorer waiting for a reply from drive a:

What is it that controls the retry interval for the disk drives? If I
can
get the FDD to respond instantly, then the problem may vanish into
the
normal background of operations.

Any ideas?

Thanks again people. Your comments are most appreciated.

Darren J. Paul

P.S. If I can't work this out soon, I may be posting another message
detailing the impact resistance of Thinkpad 760XLs with walls!!

P.P.S. My 760 now also has the latest bios.
