I missed the beginning of this thread, so ignore if I'm misunderstanding the
problem, but whenever I see phantom drive access, I look to see if Office97
is installed. Office adds it's "Findfast" to the startup folder, which, at
fairly frequent intervals, scans all your drives for Office documents and
creates an index so that the Office apps can load them faster. Useful if you
have hundreds of documents on your system, a huge pain if you're like most
of us...
It's habit now...install Office, remove Findfast from startup...
