Joe, it sounds like you've been doing this the hard way. You don't need to
get a working DOS configuration up and running on the hard drive before
running Win9x setup. It can be a lot easier if you don't bother with that.

Instead, all you really need is some way--any way--of copying the Win9x CD's
setup directory on the hard drive. You can do this with another OS in
another partition, copying the files from the CD or across a network, or you
can use a boot floppy with CD-ROM drivers.

For example, I typically use my old Trantor parallel-to-SCSI adapter with
its DOS boot floppy and a SCSI CD-ROM drive. That combination boots right up
on every machine I've needed it on. If I do have another OS already running,
then I'll just copy the files across the network, which is even easier.

Once the setup files are on the hard drive, you can just run Setup from
there. It doesn't matter if you made the hard drive bootable or not. BTW,
all you need is the setup directory itself, not the fairly large
subdirectories it may contain.
