My tv remote has four big infrared LEDs plus a much larger cover/lens
that lets light out of its four sides as well as the top. It'd be hard
for any notebook to match that... There are devices you can buy that
have a sensor and that connects to another infrared radiator, usually
with some cable between rooms but something like this could be used to
help the otherwise limited range of the computer or printer itself.
Check ads in the satellite tv magazines, or Nuts and Volts is one that
is full of ads for this sort of stuff.
