Looks like I just need to slap on a fix pack, the machine
still has just W4 no FP:

Correction: The APAR says Warp 4.0, but actually Fixpack 1 is needed
for most users.
Problem Description:
Warp 4.0: Suspend notification is not sent after the first Suspend
operation. In other words, you can go into Suspend once and then
Resume without a problem, but if you do it a second time then the
power management driver (APM.SYS) does not correctly notify all of
the devices that asked to be notified of the Resume operation. So
when you come out of Suspend for the second time some things may
not work correctly, particularly MWave and Multimedia functions.
Ps. I think I have troubles even suspending once but I
could be wrong,.. I ought to install that Fixpack 9 I have..
