Thanks Bill. However, neither option seems to be viable for me.

When the main HD is removed (rear bay, left side) the PC boots
immediately to a DOS-type error 'I9990301' which changes quickly to the
'insert floppy and press a key' graphic. If I just press a key again
then it tries booting and gives 'I9990301' and 'I9990305'.

When I look in EZ-Setup for disk related options I only find them under
'Startup' (well, Test too...). I already have the startup options set
to boot only from the 2nd HD in the UltraBay which has an boot
configuration menu that launches NT on my main drive or Win98 on the 2nd
HD. Having the startup options set this way does not disable the main
HD. When NT5 boots it still 'upgrades' my NTFS4 partition to NTFS5 for
me. Maybe you're referring to some other setting in the BIOS that I
can't find??
