I just tried this approach, because suspend/hibernate has not worked on my
770E, despite numerous attempts to update what seems like hundreds of IBM
drivers.

After removing Advanced Power Management from the System Devices tree in
device manager, I rebooted, but WIN98 did not automatically detect APM on
startup. I selected Add New Hardware from the control panel, and WIN98 then
found APM and installed it correctly. My 770E can now suspend/hibernate.
