Sorry if I was unclear. When I said "hibernate", I meant that I close the laptop while turned on and the HD stops, screen goes off, etc. After I open it back up, the system comes back to the Win98 desktop. What I noticed is that the battery life % in the Win98 system tray is inflated after being in "hibernation" for a few hours because the number drops very fast and usually gives a low power warning.

Is this hibernation or just a suspend-to-RAM mode? I think that the hibernation mode still consumes power, just not as much as standby or during normal functioning. It lasted at least 6 hours while closed on a full battery.

I have an older thinkpad (380ED) and with it, hibernation means it's off. The only power loss is from normal discharge. I think someone mentioned that Nicads self discharge 3% daily whether they're used or not. I understand from some other newsgroups that NIMH self discharges more like 10% daily. After a day of hibernation, I don't really see much difference. After 2 or 3 days I notice the reduction.

I don't suspend it. I have it set so that when I turn off the switch, it goes into hibernation. Also if the battery gets low it goes into hybernation.

I think suspension is what you're referring to. It does use some power but I don't remember how much.
