Hi Bruce
Thanks for reply regarding my problems installing a Travelstar 2,1 gig in a
TP760C. (The usual stuff: TP goes 174, nothing happens, owner tears out hair,
owner asks mailing-list).

Yes, its the caddy. But there _is_ actually a shortcut, I found out, if you
don't want to pay up for a new caddy, or, as it was in my case, new caddies
aren't readily available.

IBM changed the pinout on the newer disks for the master/slave jumper
configuration. Normally the caddy also serve as jumper for master/slave
config. This means, that you can't use the older caddies directly.

BUT, and this is the tricky part: If you bend over pin 47 or 48 on the disk -
that is either one of the last set of pins - then it works.

It looks like this:

[:::::::::::::::::::::: ::] <---- Bend over either one of the last two in the
group of four in the end...

Its crude, but it works. I now have - and use - a 2.1 gig travelstar in an old
caddy in my TP760. After testing to make sure it worked, I broke pin no. 48
completely of to make sure the cable would fit perfectly, plugged the bastard
in and blasted away formatting and installing etc.

Hope this will help others with the same problem.

And of course: If you start bending over pins on your harddisk, you do it at
your own risk.
