I blew 2 Compaq laptops by flashing the bios. This wasnt a power problem.
It was a problem in the upgrade. Compaq was on the phone with me when it
happened and they replaced both system boards free, and very quickly so it
turned out ok. But from that experience I know how bad it can get if
something goes wrong.
Basically if your power goes out or anything else interrupts the upgrade,
the bios is gone. The software needed to boot to the point that that can be
fixed is in the bios so it can't be fixed.
I'd buy the battery.
