Hi,
I finally found a 701C I could buy. It's a German model (2630-TF4 ---
I didn't even know there was such a thing, it certainly isn't
mentioned in twbook.pdf), which means it doesn't come with builtin
modem (Sigh!). Apart from that (and the keyboard, which feels kind'a
odd) it's a lovely machine. BUT:
The battery wont charge! Battery-meter is at 0%, and pressing Fn-F1
tells me: "Batterie fehlerhaft" (battery defective). However, when I
bought the computer, the guy was actually running of the battery.
Admittedly only for a few minutes, but still. And I can measure the
following voltage over the four contacts:
0 0 0 0
|9.3| | |
|__3.2__| |
|____11.0___|
which looks alright (although I have to admit that I have no idea
what the voltage should be!). My first thought would have been that
the internal charger is maybe defective, and the guy was showing me
the computer with a battery he charged in a separate charger.
Only: He didn't even know whether this is the DX4 or DX2 (heck, he
didn't even know what a 486 is), how much memory it got, or how much
HDD. He had just used it as a typewriter, and is selling it because
he's getting a better "typewriter" from his wife, who's working at HP
--- at least that's what he told me...
So, what could I do? Any recommendations? The laptop is out of
warranty (11/95), and at any rate came without papers (although it got
papers for pretty much anything else --- CD-ROM, modem, even SmartSuite
--- he didn't have any for the computer proper. He said he bought it
second-hand from a friend at IBM).
Any help appreciated
Sven
PS: the Battery is the NiMH one, 10.8V, 1.9mAh. It does not fit to
well into the battery bay --- you have to use quite some force for
it to snap in.
