Hello,
The problem I have is the Laptop is used as a car navigation system. Other
than
copying street atlas or mapngo to my HD, I need the CD. It is also nice if
you want to
restore the HD after an upgrade or a crash.
On some of the Thinkpads like the 365 series you really need to get one with
the
CD-ROM if you need it. You can use an external one but it is just one more
thing
to carry. I can do with out a floppy drive more than the CD-ROM so an
external
Floppy is not a bad situation. It looks like the higher series ones with a
bay
are a better situation as the CD-ROM can be added later.
On an old NCR I had I used an external CD and it hooked into a Adaptec 1460
SCSI PCMCIA card. If I was going to get a portable CD package I would try
to get a SCSI based one that the SCSI card could be used for other devices.
It is nice being able to use my 8MM tape drive to backup the laptop. I like
SCSI
and stay away from printer port stuff as you usually have to nake sure it is
setup properly as a ECP or EPP port and then it is still slow. I do find it
better
to have a CD-ROM drive that is built-in.

If you're on a network, then you wont miss the CD one bit. If you're
not, then you should buy a network card for your TP and access your
desktop CD.
Win98 and NT can both be installed via the network.
Have fun...sj
