Have you tried the DirectCD software? Normally I'd say avoid
it, but since it writes to the CD in a different way, it might
be interesting to see if that has the same problems.

If you plan to use CD-RWs, stick with the Yamaha. If you plan
to use only CD-Rs and don't mind paying a bit more, get the
Plextor. They are a very solid company, basically considered
the Cadillac (or BMW or Mercedes) of CD-ROM drives.
My other CD-ROM drive is a Plextor. :-)
