Hi, I'm Tere in MA. I recently (March 99) purchased a Thinkpad 600E/300
after comparing it and the Tosh Tecra 8000. Basically I was attracted by the
quality of the keyboard, and IBM's good rep for tech support and warranty. I
previously owned a Tosh Sat Pro 430CDS, and before that a Winbook 486.
So far, I love this new Thinkpad. It has a wonderful keyboard (I was getting
real bad CTS with the Tosh), and it's so much faster (the Tosh was a Pentium
120). Not to mention the big screen.
My criteria leading to deciding between those two models was I needed a
laptop with a pointer stick (I've been using them for several years, I just
can't seem to use a touchpad easily, and don't like to have to use a plug in
mouse), and the ability to get a ZipDrive for the bay.
I have a small business/hobby which I run off my laptop; a website for
vintage costume jewelry, inventory for it and my collection, and I am a very
participatory member of a very active mailing list on that subject (often 100
posts a day), so I use my laptop a LOT.
I like the ability to plunk myself down anywhere and put my Thinkpad on my
lap, rather than being chained to a regular desktop. So basically, this
Thinkpad is a desktop replacement for me. I seldom use battery power, mostly
plugged in.
I have the 4 gigbyte drive, although I now regret not getting a bigger hard
drive, I didn't realize how MUCH space Win98 takes up! I've already filled
almost 3/4 of it.
I have 64 megs of RAM, as I do jpgs a lot (maybe I should have gotten more?).
And of course the ZipDrive, which I use to store my jpgs, and do backups
with.
I'm using the built-in 56K modem - which leads me to this question - I only
ever seem to connect at 32K (according to the AOL connect thing) - is it just
my Thinkpad, or do others see slow connection speeds? I'm not sure if this is
the real connect speed, cause the apparent connect (website loading) speed
seems a lot faster on this laptop than it did using a 56K Megahertz/3Com PC
card modem on my Tosh.
I live in a rural area, so I think it'll be quite a while til I get cable
ISP service.
I've been using computers and been online about 5 1/2 years, so I'm not a
rank newbie, but I'm far from being a techie. Seems like everyone else is
either way beyond me technically, or can't ttell a jpg from a URL! Not too
many in the middle, like me. To me, computers are a means of communication.
Okay, I promise to shut up and listen for a while.
