If you are having a serial port on a ThinkPad running, try this procedure
that IBM EasyServ talked me through.
Start EasySetup, Initialize the system. Start your OS. If you have serial
and IR, serial will be disabled. Enable that and disable IR. Restart your
OS.
That's all it took for me. I know most people do not attach things to
their laptop's serial port, but for those who might try (just to ensure it
works, perhaps), this could help.
