Bill, you were right on the money. A check of the tech manual reveals that
the 760XD has 8mb on the system board, and another 8mb on the DIMM carrier.
Flipping the switch lets you use a 64mb DIMM, but disables the 8mb on the
DIMM carrier. I'm up and running with 64+32+8=104mb.
As for the Windows errors, the FAQ on the IBM PCco support site has an
article about certain IBM 32mb DIMMS with manufacturing problems causing
exactly that. They even have a picture of the bad DIMM in the PDF file,
complete with part number which exactly matches the 32mb DIMM I have.
Switching to a Goldstar 32megger fixed that problem...
The only odd part is that the switch is behind the left DIMM slot, but
affects the RIGHT DIMM slot. The 64mb DIMM still reads as 32mb in the left
slot.
