There are two CD's supplied with the 770 series now..
the first is the preload recovery CD.. which, as you say, recovers the HDD to the
factory preload..
then there is a second CD which has all the then curent drivers and the applications,
some of these apps are already on the HDD and preload recovery CD..
you can add some apps, such as Fax Works if you wish..

yes..i usually keep a virgin copy on my local network..
and a copy initialized with my name and so on..
its easier to recover or image an additional drive for experimental needs..

see above..but if i have note made it clear, the preload CD restores the HDD to the
same exact state that it was in when you first powered the machine on...

HDD's are cheap these days..its much smarter to leave experimentation to an additional
drive...
