Just about any PCMCIA modem should work; even Mac PCMCIA modems are
typically recognized by Linux. As long as it sets up a UART (serial)
interface, it should work. As always, steer clear of DSP, HSP, or "Win"
modems.

Too many external CD-ROM drives use proprietary interfaces which aren't
supported by Linux. Your best bet is to grab a used Adaptec SlimSCSI card
somewhere on the net and use it to talk to an external SCSI CD-ROM. This
will be well supported by Linux and will have the added benefit of being
able to talk to up to six other SCSI devices at a time, including
scanners, tape drives, and optical drives.
