Just got my new 240 yesterday. First impressions are its small!
The keyboard 'feels' great, the tactile sensation is nearly perfect, the
key pitch is a bit small to be completely comfortable, but it's a worthy
tradeoff. Some of the non-letter keys are in odd spots, the tab key is
small and below its usual location, the enter key is small and the function
keys are half sized. Despite the whining I am very impressed with the
keyboard.
The screen is very nice, but not quite as bright as my 770. I do wish it
were more than 800x600. Surprisingly the lucent win modem is connecting at
greater rates than my 3com 56k pc card. Battery life does suck (approx
1hour, I have not extensively tested and fiddled). It does seem to run
cooler than my 770ed.
IBM thoughtfully provided recovery cds for both win98 and win95. I was
hoping to put 95 on it (to be consistent with the other machines I have to
work with) but, much to my dismay, IBM only provides drivers for 3 external
cdrom drives (an IBM 20x drive, a CNF 2x drive that is no longer made or a
discontinued Panasonic 8x unit). Apparently (at least according to the IBM
support people) there is NO WAY for me to install 95 from the recovery disk
without one of those three cd rom drives -- so my drive appears useless.
This really irritates me! So in an effort to end my frustrations I am
turning to the experts. Can you all suggest any backdoors into the recovery
cd's? Do I have to breakdown and get another cdrom drive (if I can find one
on the 'approved' list), or should I just suck it up and deal with win98?
I apologize if I am overlooking anything boneheaded, I don't pretend to be
an expert. Any help is appreciated!
Bill
