You got me to comment, Bill, to several suggestions and
past objections by you and everybody else.

1. Glue? Do you mean fresh glue each time? So your finger
would stick to the trackpoint? Not a bad idea. Don't
use Super Glue (tm) or you might need to leave your
finger inside the machine when you close its cover.

2. If the standard cover material did scratch the screens
of some models, it was due to deficient design, thus
irrelevant of surface cover material, be it cat-tongue
   or abrasive sand/diamond-powder/metal.

3. I thought of gluing a piece of sandpaper to the top
of worn out covers, thin enough as not to reach the
screen. I didn't yet. I wouldn't like to get loose
   sand particles inside the keyboard.

4. My index finger is beginning to show the "occupationally
caused finger dimple shown by users of certain laptops"
which is documented in the "International Journal of
Computer Related Finger Pathologies" on the shelves
   of all good Tongue-in-Cheek libraries.

5. Come to think, Bill, we could market, for Halloween,
   ThinkPads (IBM(tm)(c)) with a hollow silicone-rubber
shell of a finger glued to the trackpoint. The user
would stick her/his/its finger into the hollow shell!
As a bonus, she/he/it would not need to buy any more
trackpoint caps. It would be a bargain! And it would
   prevent the index dimple.
Let's market it as the "Halloween Digit" and use the
profits to fund the annual convention of the TP list,
in Florida, with a cruise in the "thinkpads.com boat."
Such trackpoint finger would be ghostly phosphorescent,
an added bonus to those who type in the dark.

6. There are rumors that the Treasury Department is
considering, sometime in the next millennium, to
adopt trackpoint covers as legal tender.
