If you're just aiming to transfer files from one to the other, and if both
are running Windows 98, there is a built-in IR transfer facility for
sending from one to the other. The Help menu (accessible from the Start
menu) explains how to use it. If you want to share your Internet
connection, or if either computer is using Windows 95, you'll need to set
up a Direct Cable Connection using the virtual serial ports assigned to
your IR devices on each laptop. Again, the Help pages explain how to do
this. Sharing the Internet connection requires either that the
Internet-connected computer be running Windows 98 SE (which includes an
Internet Connection Sharing feature) or that you install a proxy server
program on the Internet-connected computer, which will serve the same
purpose. There is an entire section on www.winfiles.com full of different
proxy server programs to choose from.
One alternative to IR would be a Direct Cable Connection via serial or
parallel port, though these aren't likely to run much faster than IR
(potentially, Parallel could run a few times faster). One page that steps
through setting up DCC is http://hdallen.home.mindspring.com/dcc.htm ,
though, again, I recommend to RTFM (pardon my language) that comes
built-into Win95 or Win98 as well.
Hope this helps; feel free to ask more questions if it doesn't,
