I've never had much problem formatting normal ones to 2.88, even if there is the odd duff sector I still get much more than 1.44 out of them.

4 MB floppies intended to format as 2.88Mb are marked as ED. They work in the 2.88Mb drives which were in the 750C and are available as new old stock for ~$25. I've got them in a 755CE and a 760ED and they work fine with latest BIOS. Seems like IBM just kept them in the ThinkPad BIOS even when they didn't catch on in the world in general. Regular 2MB/1.44MB HD floppies should NOT be formatted as 2.88MB or you will get large number of unusable tracks!
