I use a 56k in my 755C no probs. I think PCMCIA cards emulate UARTS with 16 character buffers so the PC should be able to support that speed. (After all ethernet cards work fine, they're a factor of 100 faster in terms of throughput). The main problem you'll find is that running lots of browser windows under windoze will use up memory, but 20MB should give you at least 8.

I'm using USR/3Com PCMCIA modems almost exclusively in all of my older 755s and 750s (primarily 755cs and 750c units) under W95 with very good results.
They are almost all upgraded 28.8s now operating at 33.6, which is about as fast as you want to push things with a low speed 486. These modems and others just like them are traded all the time on eBay for less than $20.00.
