I've just resurrected a 755CX which cost me $40 plus a swap for a 1GB hard disk drive, and it's a little better than my old 755C in a number of departments, so I'm going to use it as my main machine and the 755C can stay at home sitting on the DOCK I as a backup.
Quite a bit better actually IMHO. Pentium 75 for the CX vs. 486 for the C.
It came complete with win 95 on the HDD, so I'm going to keep that as an alternative to my WFW and Linux hard disks.
Do yourself a favor and hunt down a copy of Win95B and install that if the machine doesn't already have it. You'll find it much more stable than the original version. Also, max out the RAM at 40MB. 32MB RAM cards are seen on eBay all the time and go for approx. US$75 or less. This might seem like a lot of money to spend on a $40 machine, but you'll be much happier with it if you're going to use it as your main machine.
I've got a question about batteries, it came with a NiMH battery but I also have a couple of Li-ION batteries which will physically fit - although the voltage is higher. Will the 755CX grok both? The specs in twbook.pdf say so.
Yes, all the CX models will grok Li-Ion batteries.
How do you tell the difference between 640x480 and 800x600 screens?
The SB series CXs have the VGA screens, the HB series the SVGA. You can definitely tell the difference when viewed, so I guess I don't understand your question.
How do I tell if mwave is installed? What about 50MHz or 75MHz pentiums?
You'll see a splash screen in Win95 during boot. All the CXs are Pentium 75s.
Are thre any funky apps out there to use the IR port for various things, e.g. control VCR's, read/emulate remote controls, etc.
I haven't heard of any, but it's an interesting concept. I'm sure though that if they exist, someone on this list will know of them.

James
